What is the Quadratic Lands? 🌈

I wanted to start a thread defining the “Quadratic Lands”, because it’s become a memetic pillar of parts of the regen web3 community.

I propose the following memetic structure;

  1. Quadratic Lands is a promised land where community goods are well funded with non-coercive market-based mechanisms + digital democracy reigns.
    • Quadratic Lands is not a utopia (an imagined place or state of things in which everything is perfect.)
    • Quadratic Lands is not a physical place. It is a memetic schelling point.
    • Quadratic Lands is an economic system that is responsive to the preferences of it’s citizens. QL is an aggregation of many peoples preferences. The more people express a preference in a certain direction + magnitude, the more the Quadratic Lands responsively becomes that.
  2. Quadratic Funding is a vessel that takes us to The Quadratic Lands
    • There will be many pluralistic vessels that take us to the Quadratic Lands. QF is just one of them. Retroactive Public Goods is another.

Here is one way I visualize the Quadratic Lands & it’s relationship to Quadratic Funding:

When Gitcoin launched GTC, the token distribution experience was hosted at https://quadraticlands.com/ Here’s why:

Another way to think about this:

“If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up people to collect wood and don’t assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea.” - Antoine de Saint Exupéry

Quadratic Lands was our version of helping people to dreaming of the “endless immensity of the sea”.

Some Quadratic Lands marketing collateral

This is so helpful, as I do see how the Quadratic Lands have evolved beyond a utopia. I’m writing documentation about our legacy and our design ethos at Gitcoin right now, with a couple placeholder slides for the QL origins and memes. I wonder how we might collaborate on that in a way that feels equitable between supermodular & gitcoin?

Just do your thing and hit me up if I can help.
